What Do You Do If Your Front Teeth are Too Big?

Posted by writeradmin

My two front teeth are too long and chubby. I’ve looked at quite a few options from different dentists but can’t decide on which option is the best. I’ve had dentists suggest everything from braces, to Lumineers, to extracting them and putting in dental implants. Do you have an idea of which is best?

Lane

Dear Lane,

Invisalign / teeth whitening trays

Yikes! You’ve gotten some really bad advice from dentists. The last two you mentioned, the dentists who suggested Lumineers and dental implants. I suggest you write the names of those dentists down and then never ever go see those dentists. You said your teeth were too big. Lumineers will make them bigger. And, the idea of removing your teeth is a massive overtreatment.

Braces could work, but not alone. If your teeth are too big, you’ll need to make room for them. Plus, I am guessing, as an adult you do not want a mouth full of metal in your mouth.

Bear in mind that I have not examined you. That being said, I can give some general guidance based on your description.

If teeth are too big, it is possible for them to be trimmed with diamond burs and diamond strips. Your dentist can trim the sides and the biting edge. Then they can be shifted into place with Invisalign. This is a better option than braces because they use clear aligners instead of metal to straighten your teeth.

If you have to remove a ton of tooth surface to where it gets down to the dentin, then you’ll want to cover that surface. I’d recommend porcelain veneers for that.

Don’t just jump on this solution, though. What I recommend you do is see an expert cosmetic dentist. I know you’ve spoken to three dentists already, but they were not expert cosmetic dentists. If you have trouble knowing how to find one, let us know. We can probably help with that, but I don’t know your location.
