Whitening Teeth With Silver Fillings

I have a mouth full of silver fillings in my mouth but I want to whiten my teeth. I am assuming that I have to change out the fillings to the more white fillings so that I have a prettier smile. One thing I am not sure of is whether or not I will need to do the fillings or the whitening first.

It’s hard to predict the color you will end up with, so you would definitely want to whiten your teeth first. This way you can match your fillings to the color of your whiter teeth. If you’re using professional teeth whitening, then you will want to wait a week before you move forward, because your teeth will continue whitening for that period of time, then the color will settle.

One thing you want to be careful about is who removes your silver amalgam fillings. The main ingredient in those fillings is mercury. This is a known toxin. Because of that there are safety precautions you’ll want to take.

There is something known as a sanitary amalgam removal that uses special equipment which will enable your dentist to remove those silver fillings safely. Not all dentists know the right method to do this, nor do they have the equipment. There are two types of dentist who should be familiar with how to do this and have the materials necessary to do it properly—a mercury-free dentist or a metal-free dentist.
