Is a Rotted Out Wisdom Tooth a Problem?

Posted by writeradmin

I don’t like going to dentists. I think they get a thrill over telling me my teeth are a mess. They are, but they don’t have to take so much joy in it. My situation now is that I have a rotted out wisdom tooth. The entire crown is now off and the tooth is “open” if that makes any sense. I looked at it in the mirror with a light and don’t see anything. Will that be a problem or can I just leave things as the are?

Dear David,

man grabbing his jaw in pain and in need of an emergency dentist

You are a lucky man, indeed. I”m going to say that you won’t need to worry about that wisdom tooth, though most dentists would tell you to get seen to have it evaluated. There’s no crown left and the tooth is open, so it is highly unlikely to develop an infection.

Why I say you are lucky is because it very well could have blown up into an infection that caused you serious problems, including a dental emergency. Though you did okay with this tooth, because you’ve had such severe decay, I would be shocked if there weren’t nearby teeth that have some decay as well.

It is much simpler to deal with things when they’re tiny. Check ups can prevent cavities. Small cavities are much easier to treat than large ones, which can generally lead to a dental crown. That’s easier to deal with than a root canal treatment. A root canal treatment is easier than an extraction.

So, I will take no joy in telling you something is wrong with your teeth. I will, however, take great joy in you having a healthy bite and not having any problems with your teeth. If possible, get to a dentist just for a check up and to ensure nothing is at risk. I’m not worried about your wisdom tooth, but I would feel more at ease if you see where the rest of your teeth stood.
