Brown Spots On My Teeth
Posted by writeradmin
I have had brown spots on my teeth most of my life. My dentist knew they were bothering me. We decided to try teeth whitening to see if that could improve them. I started with the over-the-counter kind, but that did nothing. So, then we tried professional strength teeth whitening. That worked a bit, but it ended up making the browns spots look more brown. Now my dentist thinking of grinding down the brown parts in order to get to more white structure. But, do you know how much will have to be ground down? Will this work?

Dear Evan,

I am glad you wrote. Please do not allow your dentist to grind down the surface. While I am sure he or she is well intentioned and I can tell that they are trying several things, they are in over their head.
Teeth whitening is the easiest cosmetic procedure a dentist can do, yet they don’t understand how that works. Teeth whitening will bleach your teeth evenly. This means that while it whitened the bright spots, it also whitened the other parts.
There are a couple of other options that can help in your situation, but I would not ask your dentist to do either of them. They are way too advanced for your dentist’s current skill. Look for a cosmetic dentist who does the procedure you choose regularly and well. Ask for before and after examples of cases they’ve done.
The first option, if your brown spots are small and few, would be to have microabrasion done to get rid of the spots, and then cover the surface with dental bonding. If the brown spots are large or so numerous that they cover a large portion of the tooth, then you would be better served with porcelain veneers. These will cover the entire surface of your tooth. The upside to this procedure is that it is what people use in order to get a complete smile makeover. It can change the shape, size, and color of your teeth.
