Can Dental Bonding Be Whitened to It’s Original Color?

Posted by writeradmin

My two front teeth were redone with dental bonding. The teeth were slightly crooked. He had to make them look straight by shaving part of one tooth, then covering both teeth with bonding and adding some extra to the side of one of the teeth. While they weren’t prefect because the bonding dips a bit where the teeth were shaved, they were still better looking than my “before” teeth. I had whitening done, then the bonding. It’s been three years and I’m having some pretty bad staining issues. While I know that I won’t be able to whiten the bonding to a different color, would it be possible to whiten them back to where they were when I first got them?

Dear Callie,

Unfortunately, you would not be able to do anything by trying to whiten your dental bonding. If you did bleach your teeth, your natural teeth would get whiter but your bonded teeth would stay the same. That would only serve to make the difference between the bonded teeth and natural teeth more obvious.

If your stains are external, an expert cosmetic dentist could do a diamond polishing technique to brighten them back up. If they are internal there wouldn’t be anything much you could do except to replace them.

You mentioned that there was some unnatural dipping, though you are still happy with them because they look better than they did before. That is fine. Be aware that bonding does not last that long so you are likely to be replacing them every few years to keep their appearance up. While it would cost a bit more up front, it would save you money in the long run and would look more natural if you got porcelain veneers. Though, it would have to be done by an expert cosmetic dentist.
