Can My Teenager Get Invisalign?

Posted by writeradmin

My sister used Invisalign to straighten her teeth. She was very satisfied with it. It did a great job in a short period of time and we didn’t even know she was using it until she told us! I have a very insecure teenager. She hates her teeth. She thinks she’s ugly. She also thinks she is stupid. I want to help her get her teeth straightened, but I think metal braces will make her feel even worse about herself. is it possible for a teenager to use Invisalign?

Dear Maize,

Invisalign aligners

The easy answer is yes. There are three ‘however’s we need to go over, though. First, your daughter’s teeth will need to be fully erupted. Most children have all their adult teeth by twelve or thirteen years old.

A second ‘however’ is the importance of patient compliance. The aligners provided with Invisalign to straighten her teeth will need to be worn about 22 hours a day. This means she can take them out for her three meals a day, as well as when she is brushing and flossing her teeth. Some teenagers are responsible. Some are forgetful. Some are stubborn.

One thing that Invisalign has done to aid parents to know whether their children are using their aligners for the necessary about of time is the dot system. They’ve embedded a blue dot on the back of every aligner. If the teen has worn the aligner for the correct amount of time and it is safe to go onto the next aligners, then the blue dot will dissolve.

The third ‘however’ is attentiveness. This isn’t about non-compliance, but more about being responsible and organized. Braces are attached to the student’s teeth. They can’t lose them. Invisalign is removable. If your daughter is the responsible, organized type then this isn’t an issue. But if they’re forgetful, they can sabotage their own treatment without meaning to.

You know your daughter better than anyone else. If these issues won’t affect her, than they are a great way to straighten her teeth.
