Teeth Whitening and Invisalign for Porcelain Veneers

Posted by writeradmin

I want to get a smile makeover with porcelain veneers. However, my dentist said before I can do that I have to have two other procedures. He wants me to get Invisalign and teeth whitening. Is it necessary to do all three? That seems like a lot of extra money and time.

Dear Emily,

Invisalign / teeth whitening trays

You should not need all three unless you have serious misalignment in your bite. Which procedures you need will also depend on your goals and budget.

Let’s start with the teeth whitening. I would recommend this with porcelain veneers. You won’t want to get porcelain veneers placed on both your upper and lower teeth unless there are serious structural issues with the lower teeth. It is much less expensive to whiten your teeth, then have the veneers placed just on your upper teeth. So, that part of your dentist’s recommendation makes sense.

The Invisalign suggestion puzzles me. If your teeth are straight or only have mildly crooked teeth, then you should not need Invisalign. A skilled cosmetic dentist can make your teeth look straight with porcelain veneers. If that is your situation and your dentist is still suggesting Invisalign, then he does not feel comfortable making the teeth look straight. This tells me that he is not highly skilled. It also means you might not get the beautiful results you are hoping for. If your teeth are very crooked, then Invisalign might be necessary.

Porcelain veneers are used to get a complete smile makeover. They can change the shape, size, and color of your teeth. If you are just wanting to straighten and whiten your teeth, then you could save a ton of money by getting Invisalign and using the clear aligners as teeth whitening trays. This will allow you to straight and whiten your teeth at the same time.
