Mouthwash for Porcelain Veneers

Posted by writeradmin

I had porcelain veneers placed and really like them. I want to take the best care of them I can. I’m have been told over the counter mouthwash can be bad for them, but I am a pretty regular mouthwash user. I’ve come up with a recipe for some homemade mouthwash and just wanted to write and make sure this was safe before using it. The ingredients are basically filtered water, peroxide, and sea salt. Is there anything in this recipe that can damage my porcelain veneers?

Dear Marcy,

While the mouthwash recipe you have shared will not damage your porcelain veneers, I do not recommend you use it as a daily mouthwash. That is because of the hydrogen peroxide ingredient. My guess is that you put this ingredient in because it is good for killing bacteria. While that is true, it does not distinguish between good bacteria and bad bacteria.

There are beneficial microbes needed in your mouth. Without them, other types of microbes will begin to flourish in the environment which are not good for you. One example of this is the yeast candida albicans. When this thrives you end up with oral thrush. Using your homemade mouthwash every once in a while will be fine. I would not use it more than once per week.

If you are looking for a daily mouthwash, the dangerous ingredient in the over-the-counter kind is alcohol because it damages the bonding. As long as it is alcohol free, those you can do every day. Other than that, I would make sure you brush and floss regularly. A great toothpaste for patients with cosmetic work is Supersmile Toothpaste. This is specifically made to safely whiten dental work without any abrasives, the way you’d get with over-the-counter whitening toothpastes.

I hope this helps. I’m glad you love your veneers. When well cared for, they can last for years.
