Moving in the middle of Invisalign treatment

Posted by iowasmiles

I just found out I am being transferred and it will happen in the middle of my Invisalign treatment. It’s going well so far and I really don’t want to stop. What do I do in a situation like this? Do I just ask my dentist for the rest of the aligners or do I have to start over with another dentist?

Pearl

Dear Pearl,

I am glad you are enjoying your Invisalign treatment. It has a high patient satisfaction rate. The good news is that you will not have to start over, even though you are moving out of state.

If you were close to the end of your treatment and there were no complications during the treatment, it would be fine for your dentist to just give you the remaining aligners and allow you to just finish out on your own. However, you mentioned you are only halfway through. That might not be the best option for you.

When you move, you will want to look up some Invisalign dentists. Your current dentist may even have a recommendation for you of someone he knows in your new area. This dentist can help you continue from where you left off. You will not have to start over. Your current dentist can provide you with your upcoming set of aligners so that you can keep on top of your treatment while you move.

Sometimes in the chaos of moving, you get busy and forget to change aligners. That is okay. Just keep your most recent set in and then move on to the next pair. Do NOT skip a set to try to catch up. This can cause serious problems including bone loss and loosened teeth.

Your dentist will provide whoever you end up with all your diagnostics, treatment plans, and notes. In fact, he is under an ethical obligation to do so. This means you can move forward smoothly.

Teeth Whitening Simultaneously with Invisalign

I don’t know if you are aware, but your Invisalign aligners can double as teeth whitening trays. This means your dentist can provide you with the professional strength gel and you will simply place them in your aligners to whiten at your convenience. This gives you a secret hack of straightening and whitening your teeth at the same time. It is like getting a mini smile makeover at a fraction of the cost.
