Does Invisalign Fix Misalignment?

I am starting to have doubts about my dentist. I told him I wanted to straighten my teeth with Invisalign. He said it doesn’t work for misalignment and wants me to get traditional braces with an orthodontist he knows. It may be that he is right and I’m just disappointed because I was really hoping to avoid those metal braces on my teeth, but a couple of my friends used Invisalign and it straightened their teeth. Am I confused about something?

Dear Kate,

Unless there are some complicated issues that you have not mentioned, then your dentist is mistaken. Invisalign was created specifically to deal with misalignment. If your dentist is saying it is not he either does not keep up with his profession’s developments or is trying to avoid you switching to a dentist who does do Invisalign.

In your place, I would see an Invisalign certified dentist and let them evaluate the situation. They can let you know if you are a good candidate or not. My guess is you probably are.

While you are straightening your teeth, I am going to let you in on a secret benefit to the aligners. They can double as teeth whitening trays. Your dentist can just provide you with the gel and you can wear that inside the aligners to whiten your teeth at the same time you straighten them. It’s like getting a mini smile makeover at a fraction of the cost.

If by chance you are not a candidate for Invisalign, you can then talk to an orthodontist about other options. There are some clear brackets you can get if that becomes the necessary treatment.
